The Better Life Lab at New America is a small team of researchers and storytellers working in solidarity with the movement for work-family justice. We focus on intersectional gender equity, elevating the value of care, and rewiring social policy and workplace culture to work for today’s families. Core to the Better Life Lab’s mission is human-centered research, policy analysis, and journalism. The Lab’s approach to research is creative and narrative-driven. We emphasize translating research and analysis into public-facing materials to change culture and influence the national conversation on family-supportive social policy, workplace practices, and cultural norms


The Communication Associate will work closely with BLL’s senior writer/editor, BLL director, team members and other outside contributors to provide critical support on all external communications activities by drafting writing and audio-visual content for BLL’s social media networks, writing and editing the newsletter, Your Life, Better, blog posts and other pieces, managing BLL’s website, providing writing support, coordinating events, outreach and report releases, and generally supporting BLL’s public presence.

  • Write the weekly Better Life Lab newsletter, Your Life, Better, and work with the Lab’s team members to edit, publish and amplify on social media and direct outreach.
  • Manage BLL’s external communications efforts, including social media, website, by posting and crafting a mix of creative original and partner content in text and/or audio or visual formats.
  • Contribute research, writing, and analysis to program reports, policy papers, and special projects as needed.
  • Support writing efforts of Lab staff and contributing writers with copy edits and constructive feedback.
  • Compile and track Lab weekly wins, manage and update the Lab’s deliverables tracker and assist Operations Manager with the Lab’s annual impact assessment reports.
  • Manage the Better Life Lab’s social media presence, contributing to and drawing from the team’s social media Slack channel, to post several times each work day on Twitter, with occasional posts on Instagram and Facebook.
  • Coordinate with New America’s EPEC to maintain and update BLL’s outreach lists. Assist with Lab reports and other product launch outreach to garner earned media and ensure wide reach.
  • Coordinate with New America’s EPEC to maintain and update BLL’s list of editorial contacts to pitch BLL and partner original work for publication.
  • Support coordination of BLL event production for external and internal events (including weekly staff meetings).
  • Problem Solve creatively on deadline and anticipate needs.
  • Develop relationships with peers at BLL and other New America programs.
  • Support BLL and project-related fundraising & development efforts as requested.


  • The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties and take on other responsibilities as dictated by events and circumstances.
  • Read widely and contribute mission-related media articles and academic studies to the team’s social media Slack channel
  • Oversight of potential summer interns


  • Minimum 1 year of professional experience.
  • Demonstrated skills and interest in communications work.
  • Creative approaches, knowledge of family-supportive policies and gender equity issues a plus.
  • Detail-oriented and organized.
  • The ability to multitask and maintain momentum in a fast-moving environment.
  • Demonstrated interest or dedication to fostering equitable outcomes across society and especially for lower income communities, communities of color, and other historically marginalized constituencies. This can be in either their personal or professional life.


This position is a full-time role with benefits. Annual salary will be between $50,000 - $60,000, depending on experience. The position is open to candidates regardless of location. Flexible, hybrid work arrangements are available for candidates in the Washington DC area. Remote/digital candidates outside the DC area are also encouraged to apply.
