Research Associate

Advanced technologies are changing the world of work, and fast. New America’s Work, Workers and Technology Initiative brings a cross-sectoral, data-driven and human-centered approach to supporting communities as they prepare their workforces for the automation. The Initiative is seeking a full-time Research Associate to support the policy and administrative work of the Initiative.

The Research Associate position offers a mix of substantive work and administrative work and the opportunity to work on innovative programming in DC and in communities around the country.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated, organized, and curious individual interested in the impact of automation and artificial intelligence on the workforce. The Research Associate will work closely with the DC-based team, as well as with colleagues based in Phoenix, Indianapolis, and New York, and potentially other cities.

The position is based in Washington, D.C.


  • Assist in developing and facilitating initiative events, namely ShiftLab convenings—design labs that help communities around the country prepare for automation—and other Work, Workers, and Technology program events.
  • Provide, as appropriate, research support for the Initiative’s portfolio, which includes city-level economic analysis of particular cities and researching innovative efforts to connect workers to opportunities.
  • Provide support maintaining and expanding the ShiftLabs community, via social media and other communications.
  • Perform administrative and logistical duties relating to the program’s finances and event organization.
  • Support the communications and outreach efforts of the initiative by authoring blog posts, bolstering our social media presence, etc


The ideal candidate will possess:

  • 1-2 years experience in a collaborative/team-based environment
  • Proven research and analytical skills
  • Ability to use Google Drive and other collaborative platforms for scheduling, document sharing, maintaining spreadsheets and forms, etc.
  • Comfort working in an early-stage, dynamic team environment
  • Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills, including the ability to prioritize tasks and manage time in order to meet multiple deadlines.
  • Interest and/or experience in the following programmatic areas of interest:
    • Automation and Artificial Intelligence
    • Education policy
    • Workforce policy
    • Technology training and knowledge transfer
    • Community and local economic development
    • Digital equity, access, and engagement
    • Bonus skills:
  • Experience with a systems database, such Salesforce or Quid
  • Data visualization abilities
