Fall 2018 Internship- Communications (Paid and/or for Credit)

Are you excited for the chance to write about technology? If you answer yes to any of these questions, you should think about a communications internship with the Open Technology Institute at New America (OTI). The communications internship at OTI will allow you to work on the many issues at the core of OTI, including net neutrality, encryption, freedom of expression, and the effects of technology on communities.

OTI seeks an enthusiastic, motivated undergraduate or graduate student or an individual with similar experience for a full-time communications internship for Fall 2018 in our Washington, D.C. office. You should be passionate about tech policy and interested in learning about and breaking down complex issues for broad audiences, while working in a rapidly-changing environment.

OTI works at the intersection of technology and policy to ensure that every community has equitable access to digital technology and its benefits. OTI’s staff includes noted experts on multiple issues who work closely with a diverse team of policy experts, technologists, social scientists, and data analysts. OTI is housed within New America, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute that invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States. OTI’s work covers a range of internet policy issues, including but not limited to net neutrality, broadband access and adoption, wireless broadband and spectrum, cybersecurity, encryption, government surveillance, Internet governance, privacy, and civil liberties.

About the Job:

OTI is looking for a Communications Intern to work with our internal communications team. You will help support OTI’s efforts to build public discussion around issues by assisting with press list curation, content creation, creating visuals for the website, for social media, and for print, and supporting institutional efforts to refine the user experience on our website. You will report to the Director of Strategic Communications and Outreach. The internship pays $14/hour and is based in Washington, D.C., right next door to the White House.


  • Support the analysis and planning of our next social media strategy.
  • Track reporting on OTI issues, and draft media pitches that resonate with our audience.
  • Update OTI’s press lists.
  • Track and archive OTI press/media hits
  • Website Audit - assist in handling and repairing user experience issues
  • Issue Based One Pagers - compile recent outputs on our issue areas that can be easily sent out for pitching or tailored as a quick hits reader
  • Visual Designs/Graphics - to be used on social media, in reports and more
  • Supporting OTI’s editorial efforts - research, content creation, and copyediting.
  • Our intern will have the opportunity to author or co-author blog posts, articles, press releases or press pitches, as well as attend educational events.


  • Interest in gaining experience and developing a career in communications;
  • A self-starter with a positive attitude who can address projects with minimal supervision;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills, and highly detail focused;
  • Available to work at least 30 hours a week.

Additional Skills (A plus, but not required):

  • Familiarity with Salesforce;
  • Video editing or print design experience;
  • Knowledge of Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and/or Photoshop;
  • Experience with a variety of social media platforms;
  • Interest in tech and policy;
