Communications Intern (Remote)

New America—an innovative nonprofit policy institute in the heart of Washington, D.C.—is seeking a candidate with an exceptional eye for detail with a strong interest in communications, content publishing, media monitoring, and analytics for our paid communications internship. (This is a remote/telework position as our offices are temporarily closed due to the pandemic.)

The communications intern will assist with proofreading, editing, and publishing website content, as well as tracking, measuring, and communicating the impact of New America’s research and communications products and media coverage.

The ideal candidate is eager to learn, a proactive communicator on and offline, has excellent proofreading skills, and has some experience or interest in public policy, media relations, publishing, or journalism.


  • Work 20-40 hours a week—New America is currently remote due to the pandemic, with the option of coming in to our downtown D.C. office beginning in September
  • Provide proofreading and editorial support to New America’s publications
  • Schedule and take notes during key project planning meetings
  • Work with the publications team to format and post publications and articles to our website, and format PDF documents
  • Monitor press coverage of New America, and assist in capturing all media mentions in our Salesforce database
  • Provide support in ensuring consistent quality of content posted to the New America website
  • Provide as-needed support to the events and production teams
  • Undertake various short research and writing projects, and light administrative duties as needed


  • A clear and proactive communication style with their colleagues and supervisors
  • Comfortable working in an fully remote office setting
  • Experience with or interest in editing content on a website (e.g. Wordpress, Squarespace, Drupal, or other CMS)
  • Critical thinking skills and the ability to troubleshoot problems
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills and time management
  • Familiarity with editing or proofreading using a style guide (e.g. Chicago Style, AP Style)

Bonus Skills

  • Prior experience in basic data management or entry experience (e.g., Salesforce, Excel, Access, other CRM) Salesforce preferred
  • Familiarity or experience with Adobe Creative Suite products, especially Acrobat
