New America is a think tank and civic enterprise committed to renewing American politics, prosperity, and purpose in the Digital Age. We generate big ideas, bridge the gap between technology and policy, and curate broad public conversation. Structurally, we combine the best of a policy research institute, technology laboratory, public forum, media platform, and a venture capital fund for ideas. We are a distinctive community of thinkers, writers, researchers, technologists, and community activists who believe deeply in the possibility of American renewal.

Our California hub does three things:

  • Finds and creates local innovative solutions by seeking out, working with, and lifting up local innovators solving problems for the public good.
  • Connects, migrates, and circulates ideas across communities from one geography to another, from a local conversation to a national, and reverse.
  • Communicates and lifts up stories of American renewal by showcasing problem solving, problem solvers, and demonstrating to Americans what we are capable of.

New America seeks a new hub director who is entrepreneurial and highly motivated. This is an opportunity to create and refine strategy, develop partnerships, showcase bold media projects, and create innovative ways to excite the public about how they can solve our most pressing problems.

This role requires four essential things:

  1. A vision for how New America CA might best find and amplify the best public problem solvers in California.
  2. The desire to wade into and coordinate multiple creative, cutting-edge projects. The Director is the primary creator of strategy, projects, and partnerships. S/he must find fulfillment in conceptualizing something new, pulling the pieces and staff together to execute, learning, and adapting as necessary. A track record of leadership is a must.
  3. Ability and  desire to connect. The Director builds all kinds of relationships including with other New America teams around the country, with potential partners in California, and with media partners.
  4. An innate drive to learn. The Director must push the team to innovate, iterate, and try new things in service of the mission. We operate as a non-profit startup and that requires learning from failures and adapting quickly.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Ambassador: You will be the first touch for new potential partners, evangelizing our mission and building the brand. You will engage with high level thinkers, funders, and decision-makers. You will also liaise with our offices in Washington DC, Chicago and New York to make sure that we’re working in tandem. The new Director needs to display a facility and comfort with developing connections with people inside and outside our organization.
  • Strategy Creation: You will be creating an updated strategy in partnership with our top-tier advisory council and leadership team. You will also be putting the pieces together to execute the revised strategy. As part of the strategy development process, you will driving the California hub’s learning culture, including by leading internal evaluation.
  • Storytelling & Knowledge Sharing: You will be helping to identify and shape topics for events and initiatives. You will conceptualize and drive communications planning for the office and for the CA Fellows in partnership with the CA team.
  • Curiosity: An inquisitive, open-minded nature with insatiable curiosity about solving public problems.

The ideal candidate also has at least some of the following skills:

  • Demonstrated record of innovation and entrepreneurial drive
  • Policy experience and credibility
  • Public profile and recognition by potential funders, partners, and constituents
  • Knowledge of and experience in California’s civic landscape
  • Diversity of experience, thought, and method
  • Experience engaging with the media and/or producing media
  • Knowledge of the dynamics of startups and/or experience working in a startup setting
  • Connection to the mission of bringing the public back into public problem solving
  • A passion for and familiarity with social entrepreneurship and/or social impact ventures in either the private or public sector
