Senior Accountant

Reporting to the Controller/Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant is responsible for assisting in all month-end and year-end close activities, managing accounts receivable and performing periodic and ad hoc reconciliations and analyses.  The Senior Accountant performs day-to-day accounting entries into the general ledger (G/L) system on a timely and accurate basis.  The Senior Accountant assists the Controller/Director of Finance in external audits as required including the preparation of supporting materials.  The Senior Accountant performs other duties as required to assist the Controller/Director of Finance in the smooth operations of the Accounting Department.

Scope of Work / Job Functions

Month-End and Year-End Close Activities
Supports the Controller/Director of Finance in the month-end and year-end closing activities. • Reviews all monthly G/L activity and enters correcting journal entries as required. • Reconciles and corrects as required all balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis. • Prepares all month-end allocations entries.  Additionally prepares month-end reconciliations and account schedules, and related journal entries.  • Assists in the management of the fixed assets, accounts payable, and payroll subsystems. 

Accounts Receivable
Reconciles the accounts receivables account on a periodic basis to ensure data accuracy. • Produces and distributes a monthly A/R aging report. • Analyzes the A/R aging report and researches outstanding items. • Reviews the A/R aging report with the Controller/Director of Finance to determine possible corrections and write-offs. • Enters all approved A/R corrections and write-offs in the G/L system in an accurate and timely manner.  

Compliance
Assists the Controller/Director of Finance in ensuring all compliance with all federal, state and local tax requirements to include filing of annual Form 990, Form 5500, sales tax and other regulatory licenses and filings.

Reconciliations, Analyses and Other Support
Performs reconciliations and analyses of G/L accounts to ensure data accuracy. • Assists the Controller/Director of Finance in external audits to include preparation of supporting materials. • Performs other duties as assigned by the Controller/Director of Finance to assist in the smooth operation of the Accounting Department.  

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills
BA/BS degree required, preferably in Accounting or Finance. • CPA is highly desirable. • Minimum 4 years of accounting experience required. • Intermediate GAAP accounting knowledge required. • Strong experience in general ledger systems. • High level of Microsoft Office software skills, including intermediate to advanced Excel skills. 

Knowledge of non-profit accounting and government grant accounting principles required. • Ability to work independently and with a minimum of supervision. • Willingness and ability to collaborate and seek guidance and input when appropriate. • Strong oral and written communication skills. • Ability to work well with staff in issue resolution.  • Strong organizational skills required. • Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
